A Look at Slot Machine Myths

Gambling has always come with a touch of superstition. Whether you play craps, bingo, or any other game you can surely find the idea that some things on that game are unlucky and some things are lucky. Slot machines are no exception to all this superstition.

Over the years people have come to develop false beliefs and these have turned into myths over time. More often than not, a story would turn into a legend if passed around long enough among slot players. Here are some of the myths that have come down about slot machines.

One common myth is that if the next guy won on the slot machine you were just playing on you could've won on that machine if you just played a bit longer. That isn't accurate when we talk about slot machines. It doesn't matter if you sit on a machine longer or for a specific length of time. Understanding how today's slot machines work will help clarify this myth.

A slot machine nowadays (i.e. the video slot machines that are run by computer chips) have a random number generator to operate the virtual reel. Random number generators don't cycle through a series of combinations.

The name of the program already explains its function. It creates a list of combinations every nano second. The moment you press the spin button the random number generator creates a combination in random order.

Next myth says that the temperature of the coin you put in affects the way a slot machine plays. This myth might sound strange but there are people who literally heat up a coin using a lighter before putting it in a slot machine. This myth is kind of funny because slot machines don't come with a thermometer on them.

Our next myth has something to do with a slot club card. There are players who don't use slot club cards. They feel or believe that a slot machine will pay less once it senses the slot club card. That myth isn't true at all about slot machines. There is no correlation at all between the random number generator and the card reader. If players don't use their slot club cards they miss out on a lot of rebates and rewards given by the casino for free (well, at least in exchange for customer loyalty that is).

Last myth says that a slot machine that hasn't been paying is highly due to hit a jackpot any time soon. That myth is a false presumption about how random number generators work. There's no exact way to tell when a slot machine will hit a jackpot.

There are more myths out there, just remember that by understanding how slot machines work anyone can demystify certain myths.
